Successful Replacement of a Geared Stepper Motor for an Electronic Toy Application
Geared Stepper Motor | Motor Replacement | Custom Motor | Supplier Sourcing | Electronic Toys
Project Background
A long-term customer in South Korea contacted Mango Solution when they needed an alternative source for a geared stepper motor used in an electronic toy product for the U.S. market.
The original motor was a customized 2-phase bipolar permanent-magnet geared stepper motor. The customer needed a reliable replacement that could be integrated into the existing product without redesigning the housing or changing the mechanical structure.
The challenge was therefore not simply to find a motor with similar voltage and dimensions. The replacement had to match the original motor in mechanical installation, gear ratio, connector, shaft dimensions, torque characteristics and operating performance, while also being suitable for stable long-term mass production.
Engineering-Based Supplier Screening
Based on the original motor drawing and technical specifications, Mango Solution extracted the critical electrical and mechanical parameters and screened suitable motor manufacturers in China.
After evaluating different options, we identified an experienced manufacturer with an existing geared stepper motor platform that closely matched the customer’s original design. This allowed us to avoid the cost and lead time associated with developing a completely new motor and gearbox.
The selected solution featured a 2-phase bipolar design, 18° step angle, 1:100 gear ratio, 10Ω coil resistance and a five-stage full-metal gear train.
Technical Verification and Customization
Before submitting samples to the customer, Mango Solution worked with the manufacturer to verify not only the basic datasheet specifications, but also several construction and quality-control details that could affect actual performance.
Key parameters included:
- PBT + 30% glass-fiber reinforced gearbox housing
- Five-stage full-metal precision-hobbed gears
- Bronze output-shaft bushing
- Low-temperature gearbox grease
- Gear backlash controlled within 3°
- Axial play controlled within 0.2 mm
- Noise level controlled within 40 dB at a 10 cm test distance
The mechanical dimensions, output shaft, connector configuration, torque and operating characteristics were carefully compared with the customer’s original motor.
Since the existing motor platform already provided a very close match, no new tooling or housing modification was required. Only the lead-wire length was customized to 40 mm to match the customer’s existing assembly.
Sample Testing and Successful Validation
Customized samples were produced and sent to the customer for installation and functional testing in the actual electronic toy.
The customer successfully completed the evaluation and confirmed that the new geared stepper motor performed correctly in the existing product and could fully replace the original motor without modification to the product structure.
Result: From Alternative Sourcing to Long-Term Production
Following successful sample validation, the replacement motor has been approved by the customer for future mass production.
The project is expected to become a long-term supply program, with potential recurring demand of approximately 3,000–5,000 units per month.
By combining supplier screening, specification comparison, engineering verification, customization and sample validation, Mango Solution transformed an alternative sourcing request into a production-ready replacement solution.
For us, component sourcing is not simply about finding a similar product.
We identify the right source, verify the critical details, customize where necessary, validate the solution, and support our customers through long-term production.
